Choosing a tractor for a Verti Drain
The most important factor when choosing a tractor that is compatible with a Verti Drain is whether the tractor can lift the aerator on it’s 3 point hitch lift and safely travel with it.
In a Municipal setting where the unit will travel on streets, safety is of the greatest concern. There is an optional kit that can be added to any 75 series Verti Drain that consists of a set of wheels hydraulically lowered to provide a stable towing frame for the aerator.

Most popular Verti Drain Models and Suggetsed Tractor Specs
Model 3 Pt. Lift Working Width
7212 1250 lbs 48"
7316 1850 lbs 64"
7516 3000 lbs 64"
7521 3600 lbs 84"
7526 4200 lbs 104"
7115 1850 lbs 64" (Mustang)
1700 1250 lbs 68" (verti-core)
The second most important consideration is the Wheel Width of the tractor. Matching the overall wheel width of the tractor with the overall working width of the Verti Drain is important so that “overlap” is keep to a minimum. Most customers want as wide a unit as possible to achieve the best productivity, so the tractor you choose should match that width. Where possible we like to see the Verti Drain wider than the wheel width and when operating the tractor wheel(s) should not run over freshly aerated areas.
Turf Tires should be fitted on the tractor.
All Verti Drains are equipped with a 3-speed gearbox that controls the speed of the rotation of the crankshaft. Matched with the groundspeed of the tractor this provides a variety of hole spacing options. It is NOT absolutely necessary for the tractor to have a creep gear installed, however to achieve very tight hole spacing on fine turf such as golf greens it is an option that should be considered.
We recommend that if you are purchasing a new tractor and will be using the aerator on Greens or Tees that a creep gear option be included.
All Verti Drains are powered and come equipped with a H.D. PTO shaft that includes a disc safety clutch. The maximum PTO speed is 500 RPM (not 540). Damage will result if the PTO speed exceeds 500 RPM. The ability to read the PTO speed on the tractor’s tachometer is a very handy tool and while not absolutely necessary, again is a desirable feature.
